Mission Statement
OUR MISSION Established in 1992, the Abramson Scholarship Foundation’s mission is to ensure that motivated District of Columbia public high school graduates have the opportunity to attend college and the tools to succeed once they get there. Our program employs a two-fold approach to accomplish our mission. First, we provide critical financial assistance to students who might not be able to attend college without our help. Second, and equally important, we provide these students with personal and professional guidance through individual mentors and programs in order to foster their academic success, emotional growth and professional development. This approach enables the Foundation to support our Scholars through all four years of college and beyond.
About This Cause
OUR MISSION Turning One Man’s Legacy into a Long-Lasting Mission The Abramson Scholarship Foundation supports promising D.C. public high school graduates attending four-year colleges by providing critical mentoring and financial support. The Foundation was created in memory of Frederick B. Abramson, a trailblazing African-American attorney and distinguished member of Washington’s legal community with a deep commitment to mentoring and giving back to his community. Since its founding in 1991, the Foundation has helped nearly 300 underresourced D.C. youth access and complete college. WHAT WE DO The barriers for low-income students to attend and complete college are significant. Fewer than half of D.C. public high school students who enroll in college graduate within six years. Students who start but do not finish college are left with burdensome school loans and no degree. The Abramson Scholarship Foundation works to prevent that outcome, one student at a time, by providing our Scholars with: Comprehensive Mentoring Support: Our mentoring program fosters academic success, emotional growth, and professional development. We pair our Scholars with Mentors who provide them with a wide range of guidance and encouragement throughout their time in college. Meaningful Financial Assistance: Recognizing that one-time scholarships are inadequate, the Foundation provides four-year financial support, which increases each year as the student progresses through college and other sources of financial aid diminish or disappear.
