CAPITAL PARTNERS FOR EDUCATION

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia, 20002 United States

Mission Statement

Capital Partners for Education (CPE) provides a structured continuum of one-on-one mentoring, academic support, and career preparation services to low-income high school and college students from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, guiding them to and through college, and into sustainable career paths.

About This Cause

When CPE began in 1993, its founders hypothesized that low-income students in the academic middle could have the opportunity to participate meaningfully in the economy and break the cycle of poverty in their families if they were matched with college-educated volunteer mentors and provided with high-quality private high school educations. By pairing each student (the vast majority of whom are first-generation to college) with a one-on-one mentor for at least two years, CPE grew from supporting six students in 1993, to 112 students in 2012, and focused on helping our students graduate from high school and attend college. In 2012, CPE concluded a strategic planning process with Booz Allen Hamilton which recommended that CPE both expand its reach into D.C. Charter and Public Schools and extend its mentoring and related programming through college completion. CPE was motivated to expand its programming based on labor market research which suggests that by the year 2020, 76% of the jobs in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area will require a bachelor’s degree. Today, CPE has grown into a dynamic college and career preparatory program that serves 336 low-income students in high school (including D.C. area public, charter, and private high schools) and college, and focuses on providing these students with the one-on-one mentoring and other supports needed to complete college successfully.
