Mission Statement

Potomac Conservancy safeguards the lands and waters of the Potomac River and its tributaries and connects people to this national treasure. We seek to improve the Potomac River’s water quality by building an impassioned base of river advocates to impart change at the local level. Founded in 1993, we drive the region’s clean water movement by providing the tools that empower local landowners, activists, volunteers, partners, donors and all river champions to lead the charge for clean drinking water, healthy lands and safe access to the river.

About This Cause

Potomac Conservancy safeguards the lands and waters of the Potomac River and its tributaries and connects people to this national treasure. We are protecting streamside lands, building resilience to climate change, and fighting for pollution reductions in stormwater runoff. We lead a movement of over 31,000 friends, supporters, volunteers, and action-takers to improve the local environment and empower individuals to leave a healthier, cleaner legacy for generations to come. Potomac Conservancy has three core programs – Land Protection, Policy, and Community Conservation. We work with science-based land protection, advocate for river friendly development, strong water quality policies and investments to address water pollution and protect the Potomac. We are building a community movement for clean water with actions focused on our local communities and jurisdictions, where most clean water decisions are made. The Potomac is the most heavily populated of all the watershed in the Chesapeake Bay, and the actions we take to clean it up have an outsized impact on our community’s welfare as well as the health of the Chesapeake. Since our founding in 1993, we have permanently protected over 16,310 acres, mobilized 46,800 volunteers who have removed 297,692 pounds of trash from the shores of the Potomac River, planted over 8,000 trees along degraded stream banks, and collected 166,150 pounds of native tree seeds for watershed restoration projects.
