THE SENIOR CONNECTION

SILVER SPRING, Maryland, 20906-4708 United States

Mission Statement

Senior Connection of Montgomery County (SCMC) is dedicated to providing programs and services that preserve and foster independence, mobility and quality of life for our area senior's citizens. The Senior Connection provides free escorted transportation services through the Senior Rides program. Senior Rides is a network of nonprofits that provide volunteer-based transportation services to seniors using a common dispatch and scheduling platform. It allows all participating groups to share ride needs across the network and increases every group's ability to serve more seniors.

About This Cause

The Senior Connection was created in January 2003 through a merger of two long-standing community nonprofits – The Seniors’ Interfaith Resource Center (SIRC) and the Allied Silver Spring Interfaith Services for Seniors Today (ASSISST). The merger allowed the two organizations to better serve the greater Montgomery County, MD area by providing free, escorted and “through the door” transportation services to older residents. The Senior Connection continues to be the largest provider of free escorted transportation in the county, and is supported in this effort, in part, by a contract with the Montgomery County Health and Human Services, Division of Aging and Disability. In December 2010, The Senior Connection added The Montgomery County Shoppers Program to its program services. Volunteers either escort the senior to the store or go for them and help with putting the groceries away upon returning. This program is means-tested based on income and age. In May 2011, the Bill Payer Program was developed and implemented, using the AARP Foundation guidelines for similar programs. This service coordinates volunteers to provide individual hands-on help to seniors who are no longer able to navigate their monthly bill paying obligations. Through the Bill Payer Program, seniors maintain a higher quality of life - staying in control of their own finances and providing measures to prevent identity theft and fraud. These services are also provided free of charge and offered in partnership with the AARP Foundation’s Money Manager Program, and in cooperation with the American Association of Daily Money Managers (AADMM). This program is also means-tested for income and age requirements. Over the last 20 years, the Senior Connection has provided more than 250,000 free services to over 7,000 senior citizens in the region, with the help from more than 1,800 community volunteers.
