Mission Statement
Second Chance Wildlife Center provides compassionate, emergency and rehabilitative care to injured, ill, and orphaned wild animals, and advises our community on helping wildlife. Our goal is to release healthy animals back to the wild and their intended roles in nature.
About This Cause
Over 50% of the world's wildlife disappeared since 1970. Every single animal saved and released through wildlife rehabilitation helps species populations, helps to maintain balanced ecosystems, and more. Second Chance Wildlife Center provides emergency medical care and rehabilitation to orphaned, injured and ill songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, squirrels, groundhogs, chipmunks, bats, rabbits, turtles, and a host of other native species with the goal of releasing them back to where they belong. Our volunteer staff veterinarians perform surgical procedures on site as needed. We thoroughly test the animals before they are released, to ensure that they have sufficient skills to survive in the wild. As a relatively new science, wildlife rehabilitation is a growing field. Innovations and advancements in care and treatment are constantly being made, and the staff and volunteers of SCWC keep abreast of these developments through networking with other rehabilitators, membership in state, national and international wildlife rehabilitation organizations, and attending conferences and training seminars. The Center accepts admissions from 9:00AM to 5:00PM every day of the year, including holidays. Staff, interns, and volunteers work to cover 12 to 14 shifts caring for patients during the busy spring and summer months. Second Chance Wildlife Center is an independent 501 (c)(3) non-profit that operates under permits issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. It relies on public donations to continue its work. The average cost to care for a single animal is $160.
