Mission Statement
AYUDA is a non-profit volunteer-based organization that empowers youth to serve as agents of social change in diabetes communities throughout the world.
About This Cause
American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad (AYUDA) is a United States 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1997. AYUDA was established with the vision that youth can serve as agents of change for other youth in diabetes communities around the world. AYUDA was founded in reaction to seeing children with diabetes who had access to insulin and basic medical treatment but still suffered complications and early death, because they did not know how to manage their condition. To this end, AYUDA operates under the guiding principle that “a lack of education is just as dangerous as a lack of insulin.” AYUDA recruits and selects talented volunteers from a competitive pool of students (high school through graduate) and young professionals throughout the U.S. and abroad for volunteer work in the care of children, adolescents, and adults with diabetes. AYUDA's volunteers work in partnership with local diabetes organizations to support and enhance diabetes education and outreach programs that target underserved individuals living with the condition. AYUDA's innovative peer-learning model uses youth volunteers as catalysts to empower locals living with diabetes to form healthy lifestyle habits. AYUDA's volunteer service-delivery model includes a robust U.S.-based, semester-long pre-program training, immersive experience abroad, and post-program evaluation. AYUDA programs are multi-dimensional and empower young people to lead happier and healthier lives with diabetes. In the countries where AYUDA volunteers work, AYUDA's empowerment model directly impacts young people and adults with diabetes and their families, local health professionals and governments, and ministries of health. In addition, AYUDA's volunteers, both with and without diabetes, are greatly impacted when they apply their acquired leadership skills in different environments after going through AYUDA’s training and in-country programs. Trained to be leaders of social change, AYUDA's volunteers gain valuable skills and experiences that transform their lives personally, emotionally, and professionally. Through AYUDA’s work with its local partner organizations, people with diabetes receive fundamental, life-saving diabetes management education in a way that empowers them to want to have better control of their health. In the last 27 years, AYUDA has trained over 800 volunteers who have served in over 20 countries and gained invaluable life and leadership skills.
