Mission Statement
Fonkoze USA’s mission is to stand with the organized poor of Haiti by providing human, financial and technical resources and to raise awareness of Haiti’s needs. Fonkoze USA works together with its Haitian partners, primarily women, to provide the financial and non-financial tools that Haitians—primarily women—need to lift their families out of poverty.
About This Cause
Fonkoze (Fondasyon Kole Zepòl, or “Shoulder to Shoulder Foundation”) is Haiti’s largest microfinance institution, offering a full range of financial and development services to Haiti’s rural poor. Its mission is to provide the financial and non-financial tools Haitians—primarily women—need to lift their families out of poverty. Founded in 1994 by Fr. Joseph Philippe, Fonkoze began with a staff of only three volunteers and has since become Haiti’s largest microfinance institution, with over 900 Haitian employees. Fonkoze's 45 branches cover every region of Haiti, serving over 60,000 borrowers and 200,000 savings clients. Called the Staircase Out of Poverty, Fonkoze’s unique anti-poverty program is designed to provide each woman with the resources and support she needs to ascend from poverty, wherever she is in her climb. Together with microfinance services, we offer business skills training, education, and health services to support a woman as she progresses. Our founder, Fr. Joseph Philippe, explains, “You can’t just give a woman a loan and then send her on her way—you have to accompany her as she struggles to make her way out of poverty.” Through a program for the ultra-poor and other initiatives, Fonkoze continues to innovate on behalf of Haiti’s poorest as they work to create a better future for themselves and their families.
