About This Cause

CAC offers affordable and free arts programs to people of all ages and income levels; we are proud to provide arts education classes and workshops for at-risk youth in the greater Brooklyn Park region in Anne Arundel County. History: Chesapeake Arts Center (CAC) opened in 2001 to serve the greater Brooklyn Park community, including Baltimore City and Northern Anne Arundel County. Located in an economically depressed area, the Brooklyn Park Community Complex in which CAC is located is the result of a $35 million renovation project of the former Brooklyn Park High School. The complex now includes CAC, a police substation, a county recreation center, a senior center, and Brooklyn Park Middle School, which is one of two Performing & Visual Arts (PVA) magnet middle schools in Anne Arundel County. Community Impact: ~ More than 75% of students who take classes and workshops are children between the ages of 2 and 16 ~ Over 45,000 families and individuals attend CAC community performances and events ~ One of the primary areas served by CAC is our own neighborhood -- Brooklyn Park, MD., which has the highest poverty rate in the county--over 26 % of residents live below the federal poverty level ~ CAC’s key partnership is with the Anne Arundel County Public School System Arts Education: Over 300 affordable hands-on arts classes (ceramics, dance, music, theater, literature, and visual arts) are offered each year, serving approximately 500 students of all ages -from toddlers to seniors each year; the majority of students are between the ages of 6 and 12. Free family workshops are offered twice each month at CAC, serving nearly 500 people, many of them from our close-in community of Brooklyn Park, Glen Burnie, and Curtis Bay, MD. In FY23, CAC served over 70 at-risk students through free or reduced price after-school classes and more than 100 students from Title 1 schools through free after-school programs. A total of 2045 students were served quality CAC Art programming. Performing Arts: CAC works with various performing arts and theater companies to present a diverse offering of theatrical arts to the community, as well as all genres of music and dance to appeal to the large demographics of our area. Our 58,000 sq. ft. multi-discipline arts facility houses a 752-seat state-of-the-art theatre and a 120-seat “black box” theatre. More than 7,000 children under the age of eighteen each year attend performances and presentations on “class trips” to CAC’s theaters. Visual Arts: The CAC mounts 20-30 exhibits annually in two Galleries. Maker Space: Launched in the fall of 2017, the Michael Stanley MakerSpace at CAC is a collaborative workspace designed to enhance hands-on learning experiences, bringing technology and tools into the hands of our community, and fostering an environment for invention and play. Community Support: Chesapeake Arts Center relies on the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies as well as revenue generated through rentals, ticket sales and tuition to meet its $2.1+ million annual budget. CAC offers scholarships and provides reduced fees for vulnerable children and families. We turn no one away with an inability to pay for our classes and programs. CAC Venues & Conference Spaces: Hammonds Lane Theater: This 752-seat venue is ideal for live theatre, music, dance, and other performance events as well as corporate events and graduations. It features a newly installed custom-built sound system, upgraded lighting and a stage area with ample dressing room space. It is ADA compliant (on and off stage). Studio 194: Studio 194 is an ideal location for smaller productions, concerts, meetings, and rehearsals. This black box theater features a 120-seat raised-level seating area with removable seating and wheelchair access. Governance: CAC is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization and is governed by a volunteer board of directors.
