Mission Statement

AALEAD envisions a United States in which all youth are supported, empowered, and celebrated within equitable, abundant, and thriving communities.

About This Cause

Asian American LEAD (AALEAD) was founded in 1998 in Washington, DC to serve the large Vietnamese refugee and immigrant population that settled in the Mt. Pleasant/Columbia Heights neighborhoods of DC. With changes in demographics over time in the region, AALEAD broadened its target population to the entire Asian Pacific American (APA) community, serving youth in K – 12th grade in Washington, DC. AALEAD expanded in 2006 to serve middle and high school youth in Montgomery County, MD; in 2014 to serve middle and high school youth in Fairfax County, VA; and in 2016 to serve college youth in the DMV region. AALEAD supports underserved AAPI youth with educational empowerment, identity development, and leadership opportunities through after-school, summer, and mentoring programs in Washington, DC, Montgomery County, MD, and Fairfax County, VA. AALEAD’s Middle and High School Programs provide academic counseling and support, college preparatory assistance, hands-on enrichment activities, and opportunities for leadership development and civic engagement, including AALEAD’s Annual APA Youth Summit, a day-long youth-led leadership summit open to all high school youth in the DC metro area. During summer, AALEAD provides programming for MS & HS youth in DC and MD. Summer programming provides full days of hands-on, project-based learning and field trips. AALEAD’s Mentoring Program serves youth throughout the DC region, addressing risk factors by matching them with a caring, committed adult who provides one-on-one support. Recently, AALEAD expanded its mentoring programs, launching the College & Career Mentoring Program. This new program matches community college youth with volunteer career coaches to support youth in with academic, personal, and professional goals so that youth can navigate the path to successful careers. AALEAD supports a network of parents/guardians to whom staff provide information and resources regarding their youth.
