Mission Statement

The DAPCDC's mission is to conduct activities and programs for the less fortunate and underserved in the following areas: STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), literacy, personal financial education, affordable housing, and economic development.

About This Cause

A. Programs for Youth in STEM, Robotics, and Coding The DAPCDC's Percy L. Julian Institute (PJI) is helping to close the gap in participation by people of color in STEM career fields. Our programs in STEM, Robotics, and Coding are helping to replenish the STEM and technology pipeline by including currently underrepresented people of color. The vision of PJI is to expose students and their parents to opportunities available in (STEM) fields. This exposure is designed to stimulate students to want to pursue STEM careers and equip parents to nurture and support such an ambition. The target audience is students from elementary to high school. PJI has five (5) operating units: (1) General STEM Program; (2) Medically-focused STEM Program; (3) Robotics Program; (4) STEAM (STEM + the Arts) Program; and (5) Girls Who Code (GWC). During the last five years, over 500 middle school students from D.C. Maryland, and Virginia have participated in 20 PJI-sponsored STEM field trips. Each school has a significant population of students of color. Between 20-80 students participate in each field trip. The focus of the field trips began with general STEM themes. Subsequently, trips with medical and STEAM (STEM + the Arts) themes were added. Between 10-15 boys and girls are currently participating in the Robotics Program and 5-7 young ladies participate in Girls Who Code. PJI has established a chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, Jr. (NSBE, Jr.). Free NSBE, Jr. memberships are offered to all Robotics and Girls Who Code participants. Both programs are open to the public. B. Adult Financial Education Program The CDC conducts programs to expand economic opportunity and increase self sufficiency and improve quality of life for underserved individuals and families in the community. These seminars make financial and investment information available as well as information on jobs, housing, and money management. Since 2011, over 1600 persons in the community have participated in personal financial literacy programs, receiving information, and having access to financial experts. C. Affordable Housing for low-income people The CDC acquires, manages, and develops affordable housing for low-come people in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
