About This Cause

Established in 1999, the District of Columbia College Access Program (DC-CAP) is a privately-funded, nonprofit dedicated to encouraging and enabling District of Columbia public and public charter high school students to enroll in and graduate from college. The vast majority of students who receive services from DC-CAP are from low-income, minority, single-parent households, and are the first in their families to attend college. DC-CAP is open to all DC public and public charter high school students, and is built upon the premise that every student has the right to a higher education, regardless of his/her grade point average, background, and economic status. DC-CAP is the premier provider of college counseling for both school systems and serves students through our core program areas: 1. Scholarships Program 2. STEM Ready Program 3. College Retention Program High School Services In partnership with the DC public and public charter high school systems, DC-CAP provides direct college counseling and financial aid assistance to students who might otherwise never have an opportunity to attend college. DC-CAP high school components include: • Individual and group counseling sessions • Student and parent access to College Information Resource Centers • In school college recruitment events • Access to conduct research and complete college and scholarship applications • College Resource Handbooks and College Informational Workshops Scholarships Program The lack of state-sponsored financial aid is a barrier for many DC students. As the largest private provider of scholarships to these students, DC-CAP works to close the widening gap between a student’s financial resources and the rising cost of college tuition. The three major scholarship programs led by DC-CAP include the STEM Ready Scholars Program, DC-CAP Scholars Program, and University Partnership Scholars Program. They are designed to address a student's unmet financial need and increase their chances of earning a college degree. STEM Ready Program The STEM Ready Program is designed to increase the pipeline of DC high school graduates motivated and academically prepared to pursue and earn STEM-based post-secondary degrees. To date, the high school program which includes tutoring, critical math/science content review classes, STEM Speakers Bureau, field trips, and merit and incentive scholarships, has resulted in higher academic achievement in core STEM classes and doubling the number of students enrolling and staying in STEM-based majors. College Retention Program The DC-CAP College Retention Program helps all students successfully complete their college education. With the significant hurdles that most DC public and public charter high school graduates must overcome to graduate from college, DC-CAP supports students for up to six years after high school graduation. The College Retention Program provides services to approximately 2,700 scholars attending various institutions across the country to support them through their college experience. Comprehensive services which include: • DC-CAP on-campus events • Pre-college seminars • College Representatives Program - College representatives are upperclassmen students who provide additional support, keep students aware of important DC-CAP dates and events, facilitate on-campus financial aid events, encourage students to work closely with DC-CAP, and help fellow students focus on staying in school. • "Triage System" that identifies students who are at-risk. This system ensures the most at-risk students are the priority, while still providing regular and effective services to the mass populations of college students.
