Mission Statement

Second Chance's mission is to retrain people with barriers to employment, including chronic unemployment, criminal records, educational barriers, limited English proficiency and poverty; reclaim reusable appliances, furniture, fixtures and materials that would otherwise go to the landfill; and renew them - people and materials - to useful life. We believe in giving people, materials and the environment a Second Chance.

About This Cause

Second Chance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit social enterprise that hires individuals with multiple barriers to employment, such as chronic unemployment, criminal records, educational deficits, limited English proficiency and poverty; provides them with training in job and life skills; and employs them in our deconstruction, retail, transportation and warehousing operations. Our goal is to transform them into workers with marketable skills and experience. Second Chance was founded in October 2000 and opened our original retail facility on Warner Street in Baltimore in 2003. We launched our flagship training program – the Deconstruction Training Program - in partnership with the (Baltimore) Mayor’s Office of Employment Development (MOED) later that year. We moved to our current location at 1700 Ridgely Street in Baltimore in 2012. During 2015, Second Chance contributed to the Mid-Atlantic region and society at large in the following ways: • Trained 180 adults and 12 teens; • Diverted 1.5 million cubic feet of demolition waste from landfills; • Retrieved 1.0 million cubic feet of furniture and household items from donors; • Recycled cardboard, plastic and metals; and • Donated expertise, materials and the use of our facility to many other local nonprofit organizations. Second Chance has received many awards and honors, including the Mayor’s Business Recognition Award from the Greater Baltimore Committee (2004); the Weinberg (Foundation) Outstanding Employer Award (2005); and the American Institute of Architects’ President’s Award (2009). Most recently, Second Chance received the Baltimore Workforce Investment Board’s 2015 “Business Award for Workforce Development Excellence,” Maryland New Directions’ “Top Nonprofit Employer” recognition and greatnonprofits.org’s “Top-Rated Nonprofit” designation.
