About This Cause
La Puerta Abierta (LPA) is recognized as an effective organizational model that significantly improves access to quality mental health care for the Latino immigrant and refugee communities who typically face barriers to this care. One key feature of LPA is a service learning model that builds the capital of competent, bilingual clinical providers through the training and supervision of interns and volunteers, as well as through cross-systems training. The collective impact of this work is critical at a time when legal, medical, mental health and other service providers are in most need of understanding how to best serve the growing population of immigrant youth and families who present with complicated medical and mental health needs. LPA’s programming strives to eliminate organizational bureaucracy that typically constrains the delivery of quality mental health care. LPA’s model includes flexibility in the approach to care which allows for accommodation of complex challenges and circumstances that arise in the daily lives of youth, adults and families served by LPA, while maintaining the highest ethical standards and utilizing evidence-based models of intervention. LPA’s programming includes individual and family and group counseling, mentorship training, and partnership-building in the community, that creates trustworthy and sustainable connections and emotional anchors for youth and families. Youth programming incorporates creative arts as a means for providing a safe, therapeutic space through which emotional grounding can be facilitated while providing portals for healing and healthy relationship building. LPA’s youth and adult programming promotes ongoing dialogue and sharing relating to cultural roots and experiences of community life, which is both grounding and empowering, individually and collectively.
