Mission Statement

Libraries are essential to a society’s infrastructure, and every great city needs a great public library. The Pratt Library is a gateway to free programs, resources, information and technology necessary for children, youth and adults to succeed and thrive. Pratt Library goals include: helping to build a literate society; advancing job and career opportunities for the public; strengthening communities; and fostering personal, academic and cultural achievement.

About This Cause

Libraries are vital to a society’s infrastructure. The Enoch Pratt Free Library, the nation’s first free library system, opened its doors in 1886, the result of the generous gift and progressive imagination of merchant businessman and philanthropist Enoch Pratt. Mr. Pratt envisioned a public library where “races, ages, and socioeconomic classes mingled and people could educate themselves – without cost,” and his passionate belief continues to guide the organization to this day. The Pratt Library’s mission is: To provide equal access to information and services that empower, enrich, and enhance the quality of life for all. Today’s Pratt Library – Baltimore City’s public library system and the Maryland State Library Resource Center – consists of the Central Library, 21 branches, an anchor library, two mobile libraries, a jail library, Pratt Centers for Technology Training, and the Regional Information Center.
