Mission Statement

WTEF provides afterschool academic, life skills and tennis instruction to underserved children in Washington, DC.

About This Cause

The Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (WTEF) is the premier nonprofit educational and athletic organization for children and youth living in Washington, DC’s low-income, high risk neighborhoods. We provide high quality afterschool academic, tennis and wellness programs in a safe, trustworthy environment. Our programs empower students to achieve their highest potential by helping them develop meaningful values and critical life skills that will lead them to make constructive choices. WTEF builds life champions. WTEF is comprised of two campuses: the East Capitol Campus in Southeast DC and the Northwest Campus in Rock Creek Park. The East Capitol Campus, which opened in November 2012, is a state-of-the art facility with six indoor and nine outdoor tennis courts, three classrooms, a computer lab as well as counseling and meeting space. The Northwest Campus provides year-round tennis programs for children and youth, including tennis clinics with former world champion Zina Garrison; scholarships are available along with free instruction to children of active duty military families. The NW campus is home to the Citi Open Tennis Tournament, one of the world’s top men’s and women’s tour events. WTEF offers a “pathway of programs” for children from preschool through high school. • Center for Excellence is a year-round program that serves students in grades 1-12. During the school year it operates weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with programming divided between tennis and academics; it includes individualized remedial math and reading instruction, tutoring and homework help along with counseling, mentoring and life skills training. During summer, it runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. five days a week; the summer highlight is a trip to a national tennis tournament where children play in matches and visit colleges in the tournament host city. CFE operates at the East Capitol Campus and serves 150 students a year. • Arthur Ashe Children’s Program is an afterschool program that serves elementary and middle school students at more than 20 DCPS schools in Wards 5-8 four afternoons a week. Children spend two afternoons on their school tennis court with WTEF coaches and two in the classroom with WTEF teachers; all students receive at least 45 minutes of homework help each day. The AACP, which is in its 23nd year, serves 350 children annually; many feed into the CFE program. • Tennis Tots is our flagship Community Program. Through partnerships with 18 preschools located near the East Capitol Campus we provide free weekly tennis classes to 350 children ages 3-5. Through tennis, children learn motor and social/emotional skills that help ready them for kindergarten. • Community Programs include free programming for children and adults at the East Capitol Campus. In addition to the Tennis Tots classes, we provide free instruction to students at the SEED Public Charter School and to local homeschooled students, provide tennis and fitness classes to adults, host community health outreach services, and provide space for community groups. WTEF is sustained by financial support from a wide range of sources, including foundations, corporations, and individuals, as well as earned income from our Northwest Campus tennis programs. Special events are a key part of our fundraising strategy; these include the annual Tennis Ball, which is our signature event and one of the most successful in the area; the Citi Open; and the Pro Am and Congressional Charity Tennis Tournament.
