About This Cause
Big Brothers Big Sisters is recognized as the most credible and experienced youth mentoring organization in the Washington area. BBBSNCA delivers One-To-One® life-changing mentoring services to children in need and helps strengthen their families. BBBSNCA supports 1,200+ children, 7-18 years old, volunteer mentors and single parents/guardians in the greater Washington region. Our service area is Washington, DC; Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, MD, and Northern Virginia. BBBSNCA has been consistently recognized as a high-performing mentoring organization with a strong record of success and program innovation. To ensure more Washington area children will benefit from a consistent One-To-One® mentoring relationship, Big Brothers Big Sisters offers volunteers a choice between serving as a community-based mentor four hours a week or as a school-based mentor one hour a week. Both of these mentoring relationships have been proven to have a powerful and lasting impact on children and are professionally supported by Big Brothers Big Sisters program coordinators. In addition to One-To-One® Community-Based and Big Brothers Big Sisters In Schools mentoring services, BBBSNCA created a variety of programs and initiatives in response to community needs. BBBSNCA Programs and Initiatives include the following: 1. Hermanos y Hermanas Mayores Latino Outreach Initiative in Washington, DC, Montgomery County, MD, and Fairfax County, VA to reach Latino children and their families 2. "Building Positive Futures" Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program in Washington, DC to help youth avoid risky behaviors, understand themselves, and make better choices 3. "Beyond School Walls" Program – partners with corporations to show children the variety of life choices they have to create productive futures for themselves 4. "Mentoring Children of Military Families" Initiative – helps children and families as they adjust to military deployment, return, and other changes 5. "Mentoring Children of Prisoners" Initiative - serves children who have incarcerated members of their families These programs are keys to our continued success and have enabled BBBSNCA to meet the needs of new constituencies and broaden the pool of children and volunteer mentors. Independent research by Public/Private Ventures confirmed that the Big Sisters Big Brothers brand of One-To-One® mentoring produces long-term positive results for children. A five-year research study conducted by Public/Private Ventures on Big Brothers Big Sisters revealed that children from culturally diverse backgrounds who met with their “Bigs” 3-5 hours weekly for more than one year were 70% less likely than their peers to initiate drug usage, 64% achieved higher grades, and 52% were less likely to skip school. Forbes magazine singled out Big Brothers Big Sisters as one of the Top 10 Charities in America and cited Big Brothers Big Sisters for giving “a better bang for the donor’s buck.” BBBSNCA is the recipient of multiple federal, state and county grant awards and is recognized as a responsible financial steward consistently meeting or exceeding program goals and objectives.
