Mission Statement

The mission of the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington is to foster the spiritual, mental, and physical development of individuals, families, and communities according to the ideals of inclusiveness, equality, and mutual respect for all.

About This Cause

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington was incorporated by an Act of Congress approved on June 28, 1864. Today, the YMCA is a cause-driven, nonprofit organization that is for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Y builds strong communities by investing in our children, our health, and our neighbors. As a nonprofit organization the YMCA is comprised of donors, policy and program volunteers, members and program participants, and staff who are committed to answering the call to serve and to be of service. We believe it is our duty to put into action programs that sustain and engage us all, programs that encourage us to do better. In 2019, more than 1,350,000 men, women, and children in the District of Columbia, Southern Maryland, and Northern Virginia participated in YMCA programs. Moreover, the Y distributed more than $2,100,000 in financial assistance to individuals and families who otherwise could not afford to participate in our programs. In the District of Columbia the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington provides licensed preschool and afterschool programs at YMCA Calomiris, YMCA Capital View, and YMCA Anthony Bowen. Y Anthony Bowen is a full-service health and wellness membership center with an indoor swimming pool. The YMCA also has preschool programs, accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, in three federal office buildings in the District. In Southern Maryland YMCA Bethesda-Chevy Chase and YMCA Silver Spring are also full-service health and wellness membership centers with indoor and outdoor swimming pools. YMCA Ayrlawn in Bethesda provides licensed preschool and afterschool programs. Y Silver Spring also has a licensed preschool program. YMCA Youth and Family Services in Silver Spring provides counseling, mentoring, case management, and other support services to youth and families in Montgomery County. In Northern Virginia YMCA Arlington, YMCA Alexandria, and YMCA Fairfax County Reston are full-service health and wellness membership centers with licensed preschool and afterschool programs. In addition, Y Arlington has a tennis center. YMCA Loudoun County in Sterling provides licensed preschool and afterschool programs. YMCA Camp Letts, on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland's Anne Arundel County, is our 219-acre resident camp, accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). Y Camp Letts also has a summer day camp; it and most of the summer day camps at our other Ys are also ACA-accredited. Throughout the greater Washington metropolitan region the YMCA's Community Health Department offers health promotion programs to educate and coach individuals at risk of having diabetes and high blood pressure. In the District, the Y's Fit and Well Program leads classes to help seniors stay active. In the District and Arlington County, our Youth and Government and Model General Assembly Programs help teenagers make positive changes in their communities through civic engagement.
