Mission Statement
Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) accompanies those in need to foster resiliency, self-sufficiency, and access to opportunities by creating, connecting with, and engaging welcoming communities.
About This Cause
Inspired to serve their neighbors in need in the wake of World War I, a group of seven Lutheran entities formed the Lutheran Inner Mission Board in 1917 and coordinated community efforts to volunteer at hospitals, visit jails, and offer companionship. Later renamed Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA), the agency shares a long, vibrant legacy of service: from sheltering families during the Great Depression, supporting unemployed adults, and hosting a camp for underserved children in the 1940s, to welcoming refugees during the Vietnam War, providing wraparound mental health services in the 1960s, and later serving children involved in the foster care system. Today, LSSNCA accompanies those in need to foster resiliency, self-sufficiency, and access to opportunities by creating, connecting with, and engaging welcoming communities. The organizational mission is grounded in three core values: belief in the inherent dignity of all human beings; collaborating with integrity and accountability; and advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice. LSSNCA is a nonsectarian, multiservice 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with sites in Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., and is committed to serving its neighbors regardless of age, ancestry, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or any other basis or status. As an essential “safety net” in the community, LSSNCA’s services include resettlement, case management, workforce development, mental health support, and citizenship and legal services for refugees and other newcomer populations, as well as; foster care and family reunification for unaccompanied children seeking humanitarian relief. Having managed the extraordinary emergency arrival of more than 4,500 Afghans between July 2021 and September 2022, LSSNCA has grown to meet the needs within the community. Since the collapse of Kabul, LSSNCA has increased its staff to over 250 employees, engaged in site and service area expansion, and innovated new programs. In FY 2023, LSSNCA served more than 3,000 program participants from 46 countries and engaged more than 2,000 volunteers from within the community. In January 2023, LSSNCA launched its new Resource Center in Alexandria, Virginia, which now serves as a central location for English and cultural orientation classes, distribution center for in-kind donations, and home base of support for numerous populations in the community. In 2024, LSSNCA was re-accredited by the Council on Accreditation in recognition of meeting standards for social services that are appropriate, coordinated, culturally competent, evidence-based, and that are provided by a skilled and supported workforce. In addition, LSSNCA is certified Gold for financial and programmatic transparency by Candid (formerly GuideStar) and rated as a 4-star charity by Charity Navigator.
