Mission Statement

The Greater Washington Urban League (“GWUL” or “the League”) envisions a DC Metro Area inclusive of viable Black communities where systemically disenfranchised populations are thriving unimpeded and unharmed by structural racism and hatred. Thus, the League is on a mission to increase the economic and political power of historically disenfranchised and excluded Black and other populations of color. GWUL works to advance racial equity as a mechanism to achieve equality while also driving the acceleration of economic self-reliance, political parity and physical and mental wellness.

About This Cause

The Greater Washington Urban League is one of the District of Columbia’s oldest civil rights and community service organizations. The League was in its infancy in 1938 when the Great Migration brought thousands of Blacks fleeing onerous Jim Crow laws and a repressive system of segregation to the District. Today, the League is still guiding individuals on the road to self-sufficiency through the midst of prison pipelining, police brutality and disparities across all measures of health and wealth. For 84 years, the League has impacted millions of lives standing on society’s frontlines, as well as in the trenches, serving as a safety net and facilitator of opportunity in the Greater Washington DC community. GWUL empowers communities and changes lives through social work, advocacy, emergency assistance, economic empowerment and human capital development. We are a powerful voice issuing a clarion call for fairness, equality and justice in a community and society where all of us must remain vigilant against the erosion of our civil and human rights.
