NATIONAL PARKS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION

Mission Statement

Established in 1919, for the past 104 years the National Parks Conservation Association has been the only national conservation group to devote itself exclusively to protecting, preserving, and improving America’s national parks.

About This Cause

We believe that America's national parks and historical sites embody the American spirit. They are windows to our past, homes to some of our rarest plants and animal species, and places where every American can go to find inspiration, peace, and open space. But these living, breathing monuments to our nation's history, culture, and landscape need care and support to overcome the many dangers that threaten to destroy them forever. At the National Parks Conservation Association, we work every day to ensure our national parks get that vital care and support. NPCA plays a crucial role in ensuring that these magnificent lands and landmarks are protected in perpetuity: > we advocate for the national parks and the National Park Service; > we educate decision makers and the public about the importance of preserving the parks; > we help to convince members of Congress to uphold the laws that protect the parks and to support new legislation to address threats to the parks; > we fight attempts to weaken these laws in the courts; > and we assess the health of the parks and park management to better inform our advocacy work. In the last year alone, the generous support of our donors empowered NPCA to: • Win our 15-year battle to enact strict new rules for snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park, including noise and air pollution limits that will allow winter visitors to experience the wonders of our nation's oldest national park in peace • Secure the designation of historic sites like the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad, First State, and Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monuments, advancing efforts to diversify our parks to more fully reflect America's shared heritage • Block the planned Eagle Mountain Landfill, one of the largest ever proposed in the lower 48 states, which would have dumped up to 20,000 tons of garbage each day next to the beautiful canyons and hillside habitats of California’s Joshua Tree National Park But despite these victories, our national parks remain at extreme risk. Our national parks need our help. With the National Park System’s Centennial approaching in 2016, our parks should be living up to their potential, not threatened with the possibility of disrepair, looting, vandalism, development and other threats that can accompany underfunding. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to see that our national parks are fully ready for their second century of service to the American people. We invite you to become part of the NPCA family. Your donation will support the program areas listed below and many other initiatives. Visit our website for more information about the impact of - and the need for - your donation. Together, we can protect our national parks for this generation and those that come after.
