Mission Statement

The Humane Society of the United States is America’s largest and most effective animal protection organization, fighting for the protection and care of all animals through advocacy, education and hands-on programs, since 1954.

About This Cause

The Humane Society of the United States seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals—a world that will also benefit people. We are America's mainstream force against cruelty, exploitation and neglect, as well as the most trusted voice extolling the human-animal bond. Along with our affiliates, we provide direct care to more than 100,000 animals each year - more than any other animal welfare organization - through our sanctuaries, veterinary programs and emergency shelters and rescues. While we come to the aid of animals in crisis, our primary mission is to prevent cruelty, before it occurs. We work to reduce suffering and improve the lives of all animals by advocating for better laws; investigating animal cruelty; encouraging corporations to adopt animal-friendly policies; conducting animal rescue and emergency response; and providing direct care for thousands of animals at our sanctuaries, emergency shelters, wildlife rehabilitation centers, and mobile veterinary clinics. Your gift helps make sure our Fight for All Animals can continue like eliminating puppy mills, animal cruelty, animals in testing & research, factory farming, and wildlife trade; as well as serving pet owners in underserved communities and rescuing animals from neglect and natural disasters and all our work to protect animals. We work to: End the cruelest practices • We fight the worst, most institutionalized abuse around the world ending cosmetic testing on animals, and greatly reducing the trophy hunting of wildlife. • We also work to ease the suffering of billions of farm animals by targeting and eliminating cruel systems of confinement, end the brutal dog-meat trade in South Korea, and put an end to puppy mills. Care for animals in crises • We respond to cruelty and disasters where the need is the greatest, reducing the use of lethal and cruel animals management approaches, and provide transport and sanctuary to animals in crisis. Build a stronger animal protection movement • We drive change for animals locally, nationally, and globally through advocacy, direct care, education and enforcement of laws.   We have:     • The world’s greatest roster of scientists and other experts in animal welfare  • State directors across the country working at the local level  • Partner with over 300 Shelter allies to move animals during disasters • Rescued thousands of animals from puppy mills, animal fighting operations, natural disasters and other large-scale situations of cruelty and neglect • Programs that provide veterinary care and other animal services to inner cities, and a veterinary affiliate that provides these services to Native American reservations  • A global affiliate, Humane Society International, with programs in more than 50 countries    We take a mainstream approach and combat the most severe forms of cruelty and abuse. Leaders in the humane movement ranked us the most effective animal organization in the country.
