Humane World for Animals formerly called the Humane Society of the United States is America’s largest and most effective animal protection organization, fighting for the protection and care of all animals through advocacy, education and hands-on programs, since 1954.
About This Cause
For over 70 years, Humane World for Animals—formerly called the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International—has worked around the globe to tackle the root causes of animal cruelty, animal suffering, and to promote animal welfare and animal protection for lasting, systemic change. Driving toward the greatest global impact, we aim to achieve the vision behind our name: a more humane world for all animals. With millions of supporters and work happening in over 50 countries, we address the most deeply entrenched forms of animal cruelty and neglect by working on the biggest problems and creating long-term solutions for lasting change. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., we operate programs and partnerships that span communities across the United States and around the world. From animal rescue and disaster relief to ending puppy mills, animal testing, and improving farm animal welfare, we work to protect dogs, cats, horses, marine mammals, and wildlife everywhere. We tackle the root causes of cruelty by shifting human behavior and advocating for animal protection laws and policies—making change at scale through education, outreach, and collaboration. We work across borders, bringing diverse expertise to the most complex issues in animal welfare, and doing it all with a compassionate and welcoming approach. As the leading voice in the animal protection space, we work to end the cruelest practices, care for animals in crisis, and build a stronger, global animal protection movement. Since 1954, we’ve helped to pass hundreds of landmark animal welfare laws, rescued thousands of animals, and cared for and protected millions more. Our political lobbying affiliate in the U.S., the Humane World Action Fund—formerly the Humane Society Legislative Fund—advances our mission by passing animal protection legislation at the state and federal levels and educating the public about key animal welfare issues.
