Mission Statement
The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington is to help boys and girls of all backgrounds, especially those who need us most, build confidence, develop character and acquire the skills needed to become productive, civic-minded, responsible adults.
About This Cause
For the last 134 years, we have positively impacted the lives of greater Washington youth. We fill a vital service gap, our 15 Clubs serve over 21,000 youth ages 5-18 on an annual basis. More than 70% of our youth are black, and 92% identify as a minority. Approximately 75% of all youth are from low-income families, and for some Clubs, this percentage is as high as 96%. These families have limited means for meaningful and consistent afterschool and summer activities for their children, but through generous support from partners we can continue our work, through such a pivotal time. For youth and staff already feeling unsafe due to the COVID-19 pandemic, watching heartbreaking reminders of racial and criminal justice disparities come to a boiling point within our nation, cities and neighborhoods drastically increased anxieties. Through a combination of public and private partnerships and support, we have been able to create initiatives to help us remain mission focused, and provide essential services to our families during this critical time. • Extending Club hours, in some cases 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., to ensure learning loss is minimized and providing two meals daily • Distributing 2,400 meals a month including weekends • Provided childcare in VA and MD for hospital and other essential workers’ children • Created virtual programming – up to eight hours daily in summer via Clubhouse @ Your House and currently hosting lunch and after school hours • Re-opened Clubs in DC and VA for Summer Camp Here at BGCGW, we are working to combat that through the provision of our virtual Club, opening our physical doors for in person tutoring and computer lab time and much more. BGCGW looks forward to the day, where COVID-19 is no longer a threat, and we can open our Blue Doors once again.
