Mission Statement

The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit dedicated to empowering everyone to fully participate in our democracy. With active Leagues in all 50 states and more than 750 Leagues across the country, we engage in advocacy, education, litigation, and organizing to protect every American’s freedom to vote. Founded in 1920, the League referred to as a “mighty political experiment,” it aimed to help newly enfranchised women exercise their right to vote. Learn more about our history. Today, the League has expanded our vision of a more inclusive democracy where all Americans, regardless of gender, sex, race, ability, or party can see themselves represented in our government. To build this vision, we bring a social justice lens to the issues of: • Expanding Voter Access; • Fighting Voter Suppression; • Money in Politics; • Redistricting; and • Safe and Fair Elections. Additionally, we promote social and economic justice through the lenses of health care, the environment, immigration reform, and the Census.

Voter Education We host hundreds of candidate debates and forums across the country each year and provide straightforward information about candidates and ballot issues. Through print and online resources, including VOTE411.org, we equip voters with essential information about the election process in each state, including polling place hours and locations, ballot information, early or absentee voting rules, voter registration deadlines, ID requirements and more. Voter Registration Education As the nation’s largest and longest-standing grassroots voter registration organization, our volunteers register hundreds of thousands of voters and host community voter registration drives across the country each year. We concentrate our registration drives at locations that reach large numbers of unregistered voters, including high schools and community colleges, transit hubs, and naturalization ceremonies. Each year, we also help tens of thousands of Americans register online at VOTE411.org. Redistricting: People Powered Fair Maps™ In 2019, we launched the People Powered Fair Maps™ (PPFM) program to advocate for the creation of equitable, accurate maps in all 50 states and DC and to educate about redistricting and increase public engagement in the 2021 map drawing process. People Powered Fair Maps™ focuses on: Ensuring equity and transparency in the map-drawing process Advocating for independent redistricting commissions and the integrity of existing commissions Pushing for restoration of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 Monitoring and protecting the “free and fair” clause in state constitutions Increasing education and public engagement in the community districting process Legal Work The League is at the forefront of the most important federal and state cases across the United States. Our legal team works tirelessly, filing dozens of cases through the year to oppose all forms of voter suppression, including: Discriminatory voter ID laws; Attacks on voter registration; Last-minute Election Day barriers; The elimination of voting locations in underserved communities; Unjust voter purges; and Attempts to limit access to early and mail-in voting. Election Administration, Election Monitoring and Observation: The League sometimes engages in monitoring elections to ensure that they are conducted fairly and without irregularities. They may observe polling places to identify any issues that could disenfranchise voters and work to address these problems. The League Supports election administration officials, promotes nonpartisan pollworkers, and has shown the "No Time to Fail" film that connects people with the challenges facing the pollworkers and election officials. We have also received awards for transparency and our use of funding. We have received a Platinum Transparency Award from Guidestar/Candid, and we are rated the maximum "Four Stars" by Charity Navigator. We also have received an badge from "Great Nonprofits".
