Mission Statement
Established in 1968, Falls Church-McLean Children's Center provides all children, regardless of their family's financial resources, with a high-quality, early education designed to help them build the essential skills they need for success in school and in life. The Children's Center reserves more than half of its 75 spaces for children from low-income, working families to give them an affordable, safe, nurturing place. While parents work, children receive breakfast, lunch and two healthy snacks and a full day of activities, including time outdoors, led by our well-trained preschool teachers. More than 90% of children leave to start kindergarten with expected skills, including English language.
About This Cause
From birth to age five, everything that a child experiences builds their "brain architecture" that becomes their capacity for life-long learning and their social skills to get along with others. These early years are critical, especially for children from low-income families and those that speak a language other than English, to have the chance to spend their days in an enriching environment with well-trained teachers. For more than 50 years, Falls Church-McLean Children's Center has been providing young children a high-quality, early education program where they can learn through play and discovery to build their essential skills to be ready for success in school. In classrooms with low student/teacher ratios, children ages 2-5 build their language, literacy, and social-emotional skills, along with pre-math, cognitive and physical skills to levels expected of kindergarteners. Children from families that speak languages other than English build vocabularies in both languages. By the time they leave for kindergarten, they are bilingual, able to communicate with their family members in their native language and with teachers and classmates in English. To keep our full-time, year-round program affordable and accessible to the families and children who need it most, the Children's Center relies on the generosity of individual donors. Tax deductible donations of any amount will give a child the life-changing access to the path toward academic success and a rewarding life with good health and financial self-sufficiency. A gift of $25 buys class supplies for a class' creative activities for a week. A gift of $50 buys story books, in English and Spanish, for our preschoolers. A gift of $125 covers a weekly, half-hour speech therapy session for 2 children. A gift of $300 provides a week's breakfast and snacks for our 75 children. A gift of $500 underwrites a classroom study for 6 weeks, including 2 field trips. A gift of $1,000 provides a scholarship for a child whose family has an unexpected job loss or other emergency.
