Mission Statement

St. Coletta of Greater Washington serves children and adults with intellectual and multiple disabilities and supports their families. St. Coletta operates a school and several adult programs in Washington, DC metro area.

About This Cause

St. Coletta of Greater Washington was founded in 1959 by parents of a child with Down Syndrome. For many years the school program existed in church basements in Arlington, Virginia. In 1996, school leaders purchased a building in Old Town Alexandria so that the organization could have a permanent home. The school grew and an adult program was begun in 1997. Leaders in the District of Columbia asked St. Coletta to move into the city and in 2006 St. Coletta opened their state of the art building in southeast, designed by architect Michael Graves. The school program focuses on life, communication and vocational skills. St. Coletta also operates three adult programs that feature day habitation and supported employment. At each adult program we have a retail store, St. Coletta Shops. The shops sell fused glass jewelry and tableware and hand woven fashion accessories -- all made by participants in our programs. The shops also has an on-line store (www.stcolettashops.com) and the fulfillment center is part of our Maryland adult program. Our goal at St. Coletta is to help everyone become as independent as possible.
