Mission Statement
Dedicated to preserving, understanding, and sharing the history and genealogy of Lancaster and Virginia's Northern Neck
About This Cause
Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library, Inc., doing business as Lancaster Virginia Historical Society (LVHS), encompasses a campus of the original 1742 Court House Green, circa 1828 Lancaster House, 1797 Clerk’s Office, 1820s Old Jail, and Genealogy and History Research Library. LVHS has the mission to discover, collect, preserve, understand and interpret the history of Lancaster and surrounding counties of the Commonwealth of Virginia for the enjoyment and educational benefit of all residents, succeeding generations, and visitors, and for the vitality of the area, fulfilled through exhibits, programs, research, and collaborative activities. The organization, founded in 1958, was originally named in honor of George Washington's mother, Mary Ball Washington, who was born and spent her childhood in Lancaster County (but not at this site).
