Mission Statement
We are a volunteer service and education organization for people over 50, offering transportation to those over 60 and affordable classes at our Open University.
About This Cause
The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond (TSCOR) is a volunteer-operated organization of older adults helping other older adults in the community. It addresses the need for a sense of purpose and meaning in adult life, while simultaneously addressing the social issues of inadequate transportation, isolation, as well as the need for meaningful social interaction and intellectual challenge. TSCOR provides services to those 60 and older in the community who, for whatever reasons, cannot provide those services for themselves, regardless of faith, ethnic, income, and cultural backgrounds. Transportation is the most requested service and is an ever growing issue facing seniors. TSCOR volunteers provide round trip, “stay-at-the-destination,” rides to both medical and dental appointments and grocery stores. Also offered is minor home maintenance assistance for repairs that do not necessarily require a professional. As with driving, there is no charge for this service, apart from reimbursement for necessary materials. In addition to client services, TSCOR operates a robust life-long learning program for those 50 and over. It is called Open University and offers three, 8-week sessions a year, featuring approximately 66 courses and 72 speakers. Instructors are current and retired professors from local universities, business professionals and local celebrities. For more detailed information, please visit our website: TSCOR.org
