Mission Statement

READ RVA (formerly The READ Center) changes lives through adult literacy. READ helps adults develop reading, writing, basic math and digital skills so they can fulfill their roles as citizens, workers, and family members. This mission is accomplished by providing classroom instruction, one-to-one tutoring, an adult literary curriculum and educational resources to support students. During the recent pandemic, READ has continued to provide instruction to our students. While the world turned to digital communication and learning, READ sent students educational packets to students and tutors by mail so instruction could continue over the phone. Most READ students lack literacy skills and digital skills. 76% of READ students read at or below the 5th grade level. Many do not have access to computers and/or the internet.

About This Cause

READ was founded as the Literacy Council of Metropolitan Richmond in 1982 by Altrusa International Richmond, Inc., a professional women’s business service club and became a 501(c)(3) organization in 1984. For more than 35 years, READ has trained and provided resources to volunteer tutors who work on a weekly basis with adult low-level literacy students. Several years ago READ expanded its services to include a research based curriculum and twice weekly classroom instruction by adult education and reading professionals.
