Mission Statement

The mission of Hanover Humane Society is to transfer animals from kill shelters into our no-kill adoption program and find them loving permanent homes, as well as providing education to the community regarding responsible pet ownership as well as the importance of spaying and neutering pets to prevent overpopulation.

About This Cause

The Hanover Humane Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded by a group of concerned citizens in 1984 to improve conditions at the Hanover County Animal Shelter and to assist with the adoption of animals from the shelter. With time, a network of safe houses and foster families was developed to house and care for homeless animals that were rescued from the Hanover County pound and placed into our No-Kill adoption program. In 2006, the Hanover Humane Society purchased the former Yopaka Kennels in Ashland. The 5 acre facility now serves as the central hub for Hanover Humane’s activities. Over the years, the Hanover Humane Society has branched out to not only take in animals from the Hanover County pound, but also neighboring jurisdictions, and high-kill shelters in Southwest Virginia, as well as take in owner surrenders.
