God’s Storehouse works throughout the Danville and Pittsylvania County communities to collect food, distribute food resources to those in need, promote nutrition, and connect customers to local resources with the help of the local faith-based community, businesses, schools, and volunteers.
About This Cause
God’s Storehouse is a nonprofit food pantry whose mission is to work throughout the Danville and Pittsylvania County communities to collect food, distribute food resources to those in need, promote nutrition, and connect customers to local resources with the help of the local faith-based community, businesses, schools, and volunteers. The organization was formed in 1987 by several pastors, faith community leaders and representatives from several congregations of different denominations who were led to pool their individual food pantries into a single area-wide organized facility. Today, we are still supported by over 100 faith communities, along with various organizations, businesses, schools and individuals who give their time and money on a regular basis. We are the primary and one of the largest non-profit food pantries in our area whose purpose is to provide life-sustaining food to the hungry so that they may focus on advancing their lives. Our customers are low-income families, the homeless, the disabled, the unemployed, the elderly, single parents, grandparents raising grandchildren, retirees and many more who struggle to provide for themselves and their family. We see that hunger knows no age, race, religion, or gender. No one is exempt from hunger, particularly in Danville and Pittsylvania County. On average each day, God’s Storehouse provides 177 families a box of food. In 2023, we distributed 29,988 boxes of food totaling over 2,047,000 pounds. This is 23% more than in 2022. We gave out 33% more boxes of food than in 2022. 4,279 households were served. Last year we received a little over 1,196,000 pounds of food however, this included perishable foods such as produce and meat that we received from grocery store donations. We purchased approximately 127,000 pounds to supplement donated non-perishable foods.
