About This Cause

The National Environmental Education Foundation, or NEEF, creates opportunities for people to experience and learn about the environment in ways that improve their lives and the health of the planet. At NEEF, we lead with people. We see them as agents of positive change, and our programs and messaging are practical, science-based, non-advocacy, and non-partisan, which appeals to a broad and diverse audience. We believe the key to a healthier, more environmentally responsible public is to make the environment more accessible, relatable, relevant, and connected to their daily lives. We achieve this through our organization’s three focus areas: K-12 education, health and wellness, and conservation. We get people out to public lands for cleanups and community activities, we help healthcare providers and families address environmental health issues, like pediatric asthma, and we help educators use the outdoors to teach STEM. We were established by Congress in 1990 to complement the work of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) but operate as an independent non-profit. This puts us in a unique position to build relationships with federal agencies, companies, and other non-profits, and extend our reach throughout the US.
