Mission Statement

The Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF) is committed to the eradication of breast cancer through education of and advocacy for Virginians.

About This Cause

In Virginia, there are almost 4,500 new cases of breast cancer each year and more than 1,000 on average lose their battle. VBCF seeks to advocate for improved public policy to enable Virginians affected by breast cancer to receive the best quality of healthcare while on their treatment journey and to educate Virginians about breast cancer to encourage screenings to improve early diagnosis and treatment outcomes. VBCF was founded because no other organization existed in Virginia that was devoted solely to representing the needs of individuals and their families affected by breast cancer. In February 1991, five women met in an MCV support group. Stunned by a lack of research and progress in breast cancer treatment, they planned a Mother’s Day Rally at the State Capitol to bring attention to this devastating disease. The activist seeds of VBCF were sown that day, and VBCF was incorporated as a 501c3 non-profit organization in October 1992. VBCF is not a traditional “grantmaking” foundation. Our goals are to establish the end of breast cancer as a state and national priority, to advocate for increased breast cancer research funding and the collective needs of people affected by breast cancer, and to educate Virginians on the facts about breast cancer. Our state office is in Richmond and is the only statewide, state-based organization offering free state-specific educational materials to Virginians. Our funds are targeted to provide local communities with free educational resources and to empower individuals to be their own health advocates. VBCF employs three full-time and one part-time staff with an annual budget of $457,000. VBCF appreciates the work of our many grassroots volunteers across the state who come together to advocate for improved public health policy and to help distribute our educational materials in their local communities. Through staff and volunteer efforts, VBCF provides current, fact-based information about breast cancer early detection, diagnosis, treatment, research, legislation, survivorship, caregiving, and end-of-life care. Key recent accomplishments include: - Distributing more than 75,000 free educational materials across the state in 2017. - Advertising the state's Every Woman's Life program to help uninsured, low income women access free breast and cervical cancer screening services. - Hosting an annual breast health educational event in an area of need - Petersburg (2017), Newport News (2016). - Organizing and offering breast health education at Remote Area Medical (RAM) programs across Virginia, including the largest, four-day event in Wise County. - Updating periodicals in the state's local and regional public library systems to ensure patrons have access to up-to-date information on breast health and breast cancer. - Assisting local nonprofits to provide breast health education. Since 2013, VBCF has helped local nonprofits serve more than 20,000 Virginians. - Conducting educational presentations for organizations and local groups in more than 50 locations across the state. - Hosting state and national breast cancer advocacy days to connect our state’s elected officials to their constituents to encourage improved breast cancer public policy. - Advocating for increased state cancer center funding for Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia. - Recent legislative support for Virginia's Medicaid Expansion, Medical Cannabis law, and Breast Density Notification Law - Virginia was the third state to pass such a law in the United States.
