Mission Statement

One Family aims to prevent homelessness and break the cycle of family poverty in Massachusetts by promoting pathways to economic independence through advocacy, education, and innovation. We envision a Commonwealth where all families have secure housing, access to education leading to employment, and the ability to build assets to create a brighter future. We believe that if policies are focused on prevention and programs are designed to promote opportunities, then we can end family homelessness in Massachusetts.

About This Cause

One Family’s philosophy is that education and career success are the foundation of lasting housing stability. In other words, families need stable income to afford stable housing. To that end, the organization has three direct-service programs that empower parents with low incomes earn post-secondary credentials, access improved career opportunities, and build assets for a stable future. One Family pairs this direct-service work with public policy advocacy, in order to simultaneously dismantle the systemic causes of homelessness while uplifting individual families. The organization's signature initiative is the One Family Scholars program, which provides comprehensive coaching and flexible financial aid to single parents in college. This support dramatically improves college success rates (One Family Scholars graduate at a rate of 75%, compared to 8% for single mothers nationwide) which in turn opens the door to family-sustaining careers, stable housing, and financial security. Building on two decades of success in the One Family Scholars program, One Family launched its second initiative in 2018: Credential to Career Coaching (C2C). C2C helps unemployed and underemployed parents achieve their education and career goals, leading to economic self-sufficiency. This 15-month program builds on participants’ existing skills and interests, matching them to in-demand careers in their region. By the end of the program, each participant has a detailed roadmap to achieve their specific education and career goals, and new jobs secured through the program lead to an average salary increase of over $21,000. Last year, One Family launched its third direct-service program: Family Self-Sufficiency Coaching. Family Self-Sufficiency is a 5-year program that helps families with Section 8 housing vouchers in Greater Boston increase their earnings and build assets. The program has a financial incentive in the form of an escrow savings account, and a coaching component designed to help participants access services and overcome barriers on the way to their career & financial goals. In addition to this direct-service work, One Family amplifies the voices of the families we serve through Public Policy Advocacy. This includes promoting policies that will improve affordable housing and help families living in poverty become self-sufficient, with a particular focus on policies that prevent family homelessness before it occurs.
