Mission Statement

San Francisco Nature Education is dedicated to providing environmental education programs for underserved students in San Francisco. Our efforts are three fold: SFNE delivers 2 classroom instruction and 2 field trips to local parks for k-3 students. In addition, SFNE offers internships for middle school, high school and university students. 255 interns have completed the program to date. Five middle and high school students completed our latest internship program in Spring, 2021. SFNE also offers 24 Saturday birding programs throughout San Francisco each year for adults and families.

About This Cause

San Francisco Nature Education was founded in 2000 to provide interactive environmental education programs for the youth and families of San Francisco. During the past 20 years, SFNE has worked with over 22,000 students in schools and 26,000 adults and families during our Spring Heron Watch program in Golden Gate Park. In addition, 255 students have participated in intensive spring and winter internships. All students produce artwork during the school and internship programs. SFNE uses parks and open spaces in San Francisco to inspire a sense of wonder in students. Our particular focus is on wild birds. Students use binoculars, spotting scopes and field journals to learn about the nature in their own backyard. We depend on volunteers who are interested in natural history and inspiring youth and adults in conservation.
