About This Cause

Broken Chains Jail & Prison Ministry Programs BCM programs include weekly chapel services in SCJ and CSCBCF and one-on-one mentoring in SCJ and CSCBCF where currently there are 32 volunteer mentors establishing relationships with men and women. BCM is involved in counseling of current inmates, assessment of issues, and aiding men and women involving reintegration back into the community. BCM also serves SCJ with the GIFT OF SIGHT PROGRAM, distributing free reading glasses to inmates in need, currently over 1,500 pair per year. BCM also budgets up to 10% of its net income for Reentry Assistance to aid in the successful reentry needs of clients in our program and those that are referred to us through the Reentry Network. Some examples of reentry assistance is to aid our clients in the acquisition of bus passes, work boots, basic hygiene supplies, identity restoration documents such as a state I.D., birth certificate, and their social security card. As finances are available, we sponsor clients moving out into their first apartment or transitional home with their first month rent or security deposit to help them in areas of becoming self -sufficient, thereby having a bridge out of poverty and substandard living conditions that will propel them into a different lifestyle and help them get a new start as former economically disadvantaged clients. One of the key focuses of BCM is Urbean Cafe, an entrepreneurial social venture of Broken Chains Ministry, formed in July 2011 as a Workforce Development Program for ex-offenders. Located at The Robert K. Pfaff Metro Transit Center at 631 S. Broadway St. Akron, Ohio 44311, where approximately 6,000 people from our communities, and from out of town visit each day, Urbean Cafe is serving the community as a non-profit organization. With a complimented menu of breakfast, delicious lunch and dinner items, cold drinks, ice cream, and our own special brew of coffee, Urbean Cafe is an ideal place for "filling up" for hungry and thirsty travelers. While the main focus of Urbean Cafe is its Workforce Development Program, the added bonus is the Economic Development that comes along with the programming. Because Urbean Cafe is providing a product and service to the public, there is a financial boost that comes from the purchase of our products and services. Urbean Cafe is currently providing over $250,000 annually of Economic Development back into our local economy by utililizing only local vendors for their products and services. Since its inception in 2011, Urbean Café has provided over $5,000,000 in Economic Development to Summit County, Ohio. Being able to employ men and women who may not have the job readiness skills and/or their criminal history is a barrier for them, means that they will no longer be supported by tax payer dollars in a penitentiary at the average cost of over $26,000 per year per person. BCM employees, who have not been part of the workforce recently, will now be part of the tax base for federal, state, and local income taxes by virtue of payroll taxes. BCM employees, by the means of their own personal earnings, will also now become consumers in our local economy as well. Broken Chains Ministry Home Ownership Program was launched in March 2015 to aid former offenders in obtaining home ownership after going through programming that will allow them to be pre-qualified by an area bank for a home mortgage. The BCM Home Ownership program is a perpetual giving program that will allow multiple clients to benefit from the program as a result of its funding.
