Mission Statement
Encore Programs, Inc. endeavors to enhance possibilities for people with intellectual disabilities. Participants receive experience and education in the arts – music, dance, drama, visual arts, and industrial arts – as a means of engaging with community in deep and meaningful ways. Participants embrace creativity as a vocation and produce works that bring joy to others. For those whose barriers to personal fulfillment include behavioral health issues or major life pressures and behavioral triggers, access to group and individual counseling and psychotherapy from qualified professionals is provided. Each day we build a community designed for achieving personal goals and supporting the whole person.
About This Cause
Encore Programs, Inc has two programs serving adults with developmental disabilities. Encore and CAVA are both site-based adult day programs. Encore and CAVA serve adults 18 years of age or older. The programs have a staff/consumer ratio of one staff per three clients and accept individuals throughout Orange County and surrounding communities. ENCORE is an arts-based day program for adults, 18 years of age and older, with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. Decades of evidence demonstrate that the creative arts are especially suited for instruction and learning and can help pave the way for full community inclusion. The Encore staff includes degreed/credentialed instructors who work with clients through music, visual and fine arts, language arts, wellness and active classes, technology and industrial arts. Encore concentrates upon the personal development of each participant in support of his or her goals of self-reliance and independence. Participants are supported in self-care, social and leadership skills, personal responsibility, and vocational readiness. Encore’s classrooms are equipped with Smart TVs that allow instructors to teach dynamically with the use of media presentations and quick internet access. Clients also have access to tablets, iPads, and Mac Minis for individual work. Art & Design — clients work on expanding their art portfolio while learning about aspects of composition and artistic manipulation on the computer, with programs such as Photoshop. Clients also learn to present their pieces in a professional manner to be shown and offered for sale at various events including our Maker’s Market. Clients have the opportunity to earn a commission on all pieces sold. Beauty Creations — this class explores facets of hygiene, self-confidence, healthy food choices, and pampering oneself through nurturing self-care. Through these topics clients learn self-care as a means to manage stress and increase personal dignity. In addition, this class manufactures and markets their own line of beauty products and home essentials Book Club — the instructor guides the class through works of literature using a combination of traditional books and technology in an engaging manner for clients of all ability levels. Current Events — using technology such as iPads and Smart TVs, instructors guide the class in a discussion of the happenings of today, such as politics, weather forces and popular culture. Sign Language — this class serves as both a refresher for clients who already sign, as well as an entry point for beginning learners. This fun class engages clients through the use of technology, hands-on materials, and specially-designed games. Team Sports — an indoor organized sports class that fosters sportsmanship and teamwork in a fast-paced and fun environment. Wii Boogie — this class is a great way for clients to get moving and shake their tail-feathers to popular music after their morning commute. Wood Working — clients work alongside instructors to design, construct, and finish functional wood pieces. Clients then market their pieces to the community at our biannual Maker’s Market, where they earn a commission on their work CAVA supports adults who are dual-diagnosed with both intellectual disabilities and a co-occurring psychiatric disorder or emotional health issue/crisis. Clients must be able to participate in and benefit from psychotherapy. CAVA accepts individuals throughout Southern California. The staff at CAVA include credentialed therapists and teachers. We also work closely with California State and UC university systems’ Schools of Social Work graduate programs to host interns each academic year. The staff at CAVA provide individual and group therapy and encourage independence through self-care, social and leadership skills, as well as personal skills in assertiveness, personal judgment, and accountability. Specific empirically-based therapeutic modalities are used to maximize successful outcomes. If a participant’s long-term goal is employment, he or she can work on skills that are transferable to a vocational setting. Many CAVA clients work or have worked in the past and are either retired or aspire to return to the workplace. CAVA’s therapeutic support aims to reduce incidences of hospitalization and increase quality of life by addressing clinical issues before they erupt into crises. CAVA’s classroom is stocked with a projector and screen that instructors use for powerpoint presentations and educational presentations. Clients also have access to iPads and Mac Minis for individual work. Anger Management — this class teaches methods for putting out the fire of anger and replacing it with compassionate communication with the self. Clients learn to view anger in a new light, and embrace it with mindfulness techniques. Arts and Crafts Around the World — in this class, clients focus on a country’s culture, art history, and crafts, then work to create a craft related to that country. Coastline Community College Healthy Boundaries — Setting boundaries is an important part of establishing one’s identity, as well as being crucial for one’s mental health and well-being. In the Healthy Boundaries class, clients explore different types of boundaries including physical, emotional, personal, and interpersonal boundaries. There are also different levels of boundaries, from loose to rigid, with healthy boundaries falling somewhere in between. This class discusses healthy boundaries and how to set them in different situations and learn why healthy boundaries are important for self-care. Healthy Relationships — clients work on mastering emotions by gaining an understanding on what the 5 basic emotions are trying to communicate, leading to more effective communication through clarity of feelings and wants. This class emphasizes listening and mindfulness as techniques for creating stronger relationships and win-win agreements. Life Skills — clients learn about budgeting and money management, as well as discuss hygiene and social skills. Meet the Masters — this is a multi-faceted class that combines art history, psychology, self-reflection, cooking, and art-making. Clients learn about an artist (such as Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, or Georgia O’Keeffe), see samples of their greatest works, and then create a piece of art that reflects that artist’s style. Clients will also discuss how mental illness and disabilities fueled many artist’s art making, and how various artists’ work has impacted the world. Men’s Group Mindful Photography — clients practice mindfulness through photography with a camera equipped with a macro lens, which allows the photographer to be extremely close to an object without losing focus. Clients learn both elements of composition such as the rule of thirds, and how to take time to observe the world and the importance of photographing what they find most meaningful. Self-Care — focus topics in this class relate to self-care, which clients will be able to add to their self-care routine. Wii Boogie — this class is a great way for clients to get moving and shake their tail-feathers to popular music after their morning commute. Women’s Group Yoga — yoga can be beneficial for individuals with disabilities or chronic health conditions through both the physical postures and breathing techniques. Each pose can be modified or adapted to meet the needs of the individual. It can improve flexibility, strength, balance, and stamina. In addition, practicing yoga can reduce anxiety and stress, improves mental clarity, and even helps individuals to sleep better. Encore Programs, Inc also contracts with Coastline Community College to provide non-credit courses with no registration or material fees, occurring once a week, either on Wednesdays or Thursdays. This introductory course in art focuses on basic creative processes toward creating decorative and functional ceramic sculpture. In this class an emphasis is placed on correct use of materials, tools, and project safety. Students will have at least one exhibition opportunity this semester, participation in the end-of-term Student Exhibition and the Art and Music Night.
