Mission Statement

For 129 years, the mission of the Children’s Home Society is to promote the well-being of children. Our current efforts are directed at helping children find lifetime families, protecting and nurturing children, and helping preserve and strengthen their families. While the challenges facing our state have evolved greatly since our founding in 1896, the need to find safe and loving homes for kids in West Virginia has not diminished. In fact, at this moment, there are more families in crisis and more kids in need of the security of a stable home than ever before. By collaborating closely with other organizations and institutions across the state, we’re working to ensure that every child in West Virginia grows up in a reliable and nurturing family, and that all families are equipped with the tools and support they need to see their children succeed.

About This Cause

The Children’s Home Society of West Virginia is a non-profit child welfare organization founded in 1896. Last year, we assisted 18,661 children and families. Today, we have 13 primary locations with 27 service locations throughout the State. Each of our programs is meant to aid children and families. We have statewide adoption and foster care with a focus on permanency for children. We care for approximately 200 children daily in our approved foster homes. We do not charge adoption fees to those who open their homes to a West Virginia child. We operate 8 emergency child shelters that provide 24 hour a day care and support children that are unable to remain at home. Last year, our emergency shelters provided care for 451 admissions. Additionally, the Children’s Home Society operates Victoria’s House Child Advocacy Center in Martinsburg, WV. We have 4 Family Support Centers located in Jefferson, Berkeley, Wood and Cabell counties and 10 Resource Centers located in Northfork, Summersville, Wheeling, Charleston, Morgantown, Daniels, Logan, Romney, Princeton and Lewisburg. This type of programming provides food, baby items, clothing, hygiene products, etc. to families in need. Our Independent Living Program provides services to young adults moving to independent living who have previously been in the foster care system. The goal is to prepare young adults in our program for independence and self-sufficiency. We accomplish this by assisting with individual educational, house, and employment needs. This program is offered in Lewisburg, Martinsburg, Beckley and Parkersburg. Along with the services mentioned above, we also offer: Healthy Grandfamilies, Safe at Home, CSED Programming, Transitional Living, Birth to Three and Right from the Start, WECAN, Parents as Teachers, Summer Youth Program, Therapy Services and Afterschool programming.
