Mission Statement
Carolina Ballet’s mission is to perform world-class professional ballet, entertaining and enlightening audiences in Raleigh, the Triangle region, the State of North Carolina, and beyond. Carolina Ballet works to accomplish this mission by: 1) attracting, developing and retaining excellent dancers and artistic personnel combined with a fiscally responsible management team and board of directors; 2) commissioning new works by innovative choreographers; 3) presenting traditional ballets of legendary masters; and 4) educating current and future audiences through programs for school-aged children and other performance outreach activities.
About This Cause
Carolina Ballet grew out of the vision of J. Ward Purrington for the non-professional student company, Raleigh Dance Theatre, to become a professional ballet company. Under his leadership, the company began the process of transitioning to a professional company in 1994. With the selection of Robert Weiss as Artistic Director in April 1997, the professional company was founded. Weiss and the Board assembled a staff, auditioned dancers, raised seed capital, and marketed the first performance and season. The professional company premiered in Raleigh in October 1998. Since then, Carolina Ballet has toured around North Carolina and to New York City, Budapest and China. Each season, Carolina Ballet performs 8 programs, including an annual production of "The Nutcracker," at three performance venues across the Triangle: the Durham Performing Arts Center, Memorial Hall at UNC-Chapel Hill, and at our home base, the Duke Energy Performing Arts Center in Raleigh, NC. Carolina Ballet named Zalman Raffael as its new Artistic Director/CEO in July 2019.
