Mission Statement
Hands In Outreach is a small, non-profit educational sponsorship program for very poor girls and young women in Nepal. HIO has three major facets comprising a literacy network to encourage formal and non-formal education for girls and young women in inner city Kathmandu. We want our HIO girls and young women to avoid repeating the cycle of poverty and illiteracy faced by their mothers, who never had the chance to go to school. • Our strength lies in building strong, lasting relationships with our families, children and affiliate schools. • By actively partnering with families and schools, we encourage our girls to remain in school, avoiding early marriage and pregnancy, or dropping out to haul bricks on a construction site for less than a dollar a day.
About This Cause
• For 40 years we’ve paired poor, low caste inner city girls with sponsors who underwrite their long term education from KG through high school and College. • We encourage direct communication between our sponsors and the girls in Nepal to foster global community. Over time, a lovely on-going relationship can develop that's very special and rewarding for everyone involved. • What makes HIO's holistic approach so unique, is our ability to create lasting trust with the girls and their families. Since this relationship begins when our girls are very young, frequent home visits allow our small in-country staff to almost become surrogate parents. • Through an active partnership with a girl’s family and her school, we vigilantly work to encourage her to remain in school. • We preserve the family structure since our girls are day students rather than boarders. • This focused and careful mentoring is the key for keeping our girls in school, on track to become independent, self-reliant women who can break their family's cycle of profound poverty and have the chance to follow their dreams.
