Mission Statement
SSDC’s mission: Smart Start of Davidson County engages the community to ensure that all children reach their potential.
About This Cause
Smart Start of Davidson County (SSDC) is the hub for early childhood education and programming in Davidson County. As such, SSDC works with multiple community partners to organize and ensure services are available both to the general population as well as those families and young children (ages birth through five) considered most at-risk (e.g., high poverty, presence of special learning needs, young or struggling parents, etc.) Current programs include: (1) School Readiness/ Parents as Teachers program, which provides ongoing home visits to families of young children; (2) support for local early learning facilities, to ensure high quality early educational experiences are available for all families who choose or need to use child care; (3) Ready Schools--Kindergarten Transition, which helps ensure a smooth transition between prekindergarten classrooms and kindergarten classrooms; (4) community education and outreach, including providing or participating in numerous community events and activities; (5) early literacy initiatives such as Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library; and (6) administration of the North Carolina Prekindergarten program as well as Smart Start scholarships to high quality early learning facilities. Our primary goals include (1) increases in the average star rating of child care facilities and in the percent of young children enrolled in high quality child care; (2) increases in the educational attainment and qualifications of early education professionals; (3) increases in the number and percent of parents who feel capable and confident in their parenting and have an expanded "toolkit" of parenting strategies; (4) increases in the number and percent of families engaged in shared literacy; (5) improved kindergarten transition experiences; and (6) increases in the number of young children screened for early intervention needs. Volunteers There are several avenues by which most volunteers engage with and support the work of SSDC. Primary among these are participation on the Board of Directors or on a Committee (such as Organizational Planning or Program Committee). Volunteers also can sign-up for individual events, such as the Itty Bitty Kiddie 5k Glow Run (or, Snacks with Santa)—their contributions help ensure each event’s multiple tasks are completed and that children and families have a positive and helpful experience. Volunteers can donate gently used books for placement in the waiting rooms of participating pediatric offices, or contact SSDC for additional ways to donate resources, materials, or supplies for use by families or child care providers.
