About This Cause
Burning Coal Theatre Company produces thought-provoking experiences in downtown Raleigh by collaborating with professional local, national and international artists. We emphasize works that are experienced viscerally, unlike more traditional, linear plays where audiences are most often asked to observe without participating. We develop explosive re-examinations of overlooked classics, modern classic and new plays. Burning Coal supports the vision of a vibrant Triangle-area arts ecosystem by providing opportunities for emerging artists and companies alike. We value presenting unfamiliar, cutting-edge stories that pose questions and inspire community dialogue rather than dictating answers. Collaborations are fundamental to our process, and every season contains shared programing addressing ideas important to our community. Our education programs both in-schools and at the theatre encourage students of all ages to grow in nerve and imagination. Simultaneously, theatre education classes build curiosity in literature and confidence in reading, writing, and public speaking. Burning Coal is a professional, local theatre and believes in paying artists for their work. 80% or more of artists employed live in North Carolina.
