Mission Statement
The mission of the Alleghany Wellness Center, Inc. is to provide the people of Alleghany County and surrounding areas the opportunity to achieve and maintain healthy lifestyles through health education, medically supervised programs, and facilities for physical activities and recreation.
About This Cause
Do It For Yourself. Such a simple concept yet so difficult to follow. We are all constantly doing things for others. We make friends and family feel better about themselves and help them during difficult situations. We encourage them to feel better, eat better, get out of the house, take a walk, make their appointments, etc. All because being kind, caring and giving is just the best way to be. And helping others makes us feel good. But there’s no better way to do for the ones who care about us than take care of our overall wellbeing. And that is what Alleghany Wellness Center, Inc. is all about; taking care of our mind, bodies, and spirits. Make yourself a priority. We live in a beautiful area of the world; some argue it is the most beautiful. The people are giving and kind, the views are spectacular and the climate (although a bit sticky at times) offers four distinct seasons to enjoy. There is something great for everyone who is lucky enough to spend time in our mountain county. Our area is unique and so is AWCI. AWCI offers a community atmosphere with amenities that few small communities have access to. If you do not have a membership, come see how AWCI can help you become a priority. If you are not ready to commit to a membership, give it a try for a day. Use a free pass. Try a class with a friend. Check out the pool and the fitness area. Ask how we can help you live a lifestyle to full potential. The mission of the Alleghany Wellness Center, Inc. is to provide the people of Alleghany County and surrounding areas the opportunity to achieve and maintain healthy lifestyles through health education, medically supervised programs, and facilities for physical activities and recreation. Alleghany Wellness Center Approaches to Wellness: AWCI houses a fitness area with an indoor walking track, aerobic equipment, free weights and Nautilus equipment; two multipurpose rooms used for exercise classes for all ages and fitness levels, health education classes, and gathering of all kinds that relate to wellness; an aquatics center that houses a therapy pool, used for water exercise classes, therapies and individual use, and a 6 lane 25 meter pool used for lessons, classes, therapies, swim team practice and swim meets. It is likely that if you ask 10 people what makes a person “well” or “healthy”, you will get 10 different answers. AWCI appreciates all perspectives and attempts to address all areas of wellness in creative ways. AWCI chooses to offer opportunities for whole body health and wellness both on a community and personal basis. For those who are not able or interested in individual exercise, AWCI offers many programs and classes to suit a variety of ages, abilities, and interests. Examples to demonstrate the variety of programming include karate, tai chi, yoga, chair yoga, Dance to Fit, in addition to core and aerobic exercise classes. This is not an inclusive list and is in addition to all the opportunities listed regarding facility offerings. We also understand that people respond to many different delivery methods. We offer opportunities for reiki sessions and massage therapy, personal training, health coaching, and facilities for physical and occupational therapy. We also understand that opportunities to socialize and be around other people is important. Emotional health is just as vital as physical health. AWCI offers opportunities for social gatherings and for people just to be together who share a common interest and partner for programming with agencies such as the senior center, group home, regional library, cooperative extension, etc. Successes and Challenges: The board of Alleghany Wellness Center, Inc. believes strongly that we are delivering on the mission. After approximately 20 years in operation, the facility today is as strong as we were on opening day, or arguably stronger, in offering opportunities for people to achieve and maintain healthier lifestyles. The staff and board have faced many challenges and changes and have met them and adapted. We believe that we have something that can satisfy wellness requirements for people of all ages, abilities, and interests. Recently we have upgraded equipment in the fitness area. Multipurpose rooms are utilized many hours of every day. Pool lanes are utilized for lap swimming and there are classes, therapy sessions, and individual exercise done in the water all hours of the day and evening. The current membership is steadily growing after going through the COVID pandemic. While the pandemic was an exceptional challenge, it did shed some light. We believe the COVID pandemic proved the important role AWCI is in the community, both for physical health and for socialization. Needs: We want to be clear that our community and YOU are our priority. When we are asked what is most needed, it is for you to utilize AWCI to benefit your health. However, Alleghany Wellness Center, Inc. operating budget will never be covered solely by membership. We must have continual donations, grants, fundraisers, etc. to keep afloat. Without these additional income opportunities, AWCI could not operate in our community. Offering the pool comes at great expense. All costs of operations and materials are rising. Please offer your support. Support comes to us in many ways. Positive communication, sharing the needs, patience and understanding, and financial donations are all very much needed and appreciated. Vision: The vision of the current AWCI board is to not only continue with the mission, but to grow. We aspire to develop into a campus that serves in a broader capacity to demonstrate our commitment to total health and wellness through offering more programming and facilities for all ages. Our vision is certainly impacted by our challenges. While making sure we still operate to serve as many needs as possible, we must find a way to not jeopardize future operations. Our entire vision centers around building stronger, healthier, and happier communities around us, all while remaining financially stable.
