Raleigh Dance Theatre's mission is to provide performance training for young dancers while fostering the art of dance in the community.
About This Cause
Raleigh Dance Theatre (RDT), affiliate performance company of The Raleigh School of Ballet, was founded in 1984 by Ann Vorus to provide performance training for young dancers while fostering the art of dance in the community. Under her artistic direction the company grew tremendously, gaining local as well as regional recognition for artistic excellence. In 1994 Mary LeGere was named Artistic Director. As the company continued to grow, its name was changed to Carolina Ballet, and the board launched a campaign to develop a fully professional ballet company. The close of the 1996 1997 season marked the final stage in achieving this goal and the artistic staff and pre professional dancers of Carolina Ballet reestablished Raleigh Dance Theatre. In 2021, Megan Marvel was named Artistic Director. Each fall, Raleigh Dance Theatre presents a family-oriented production to entertain and develop future ballet audiences. In the spring, the company presents Spring Repertoire, a diverse program that usually features new work by nationally renowned choreographers and a traditional ballet from the classical repertoire. In addition, the company attends and performs at the annual Southeastern Regional Ballet Association Festival as an honor company and participates in the Festival of North Carolina Dance hosted by North Carolina School of the Arts. RDT’s outreach activities include programs that were developed in conjunction with Girl Scouts –NC Coastal Pines. The company also hosts lecture-demonstrations at locations throughout the community including schools and Libraries as an opportunity for the area’s young people to see ballet in a non-traditional setting. Raleigh Dance Theatre alumni have gone on to professional careers in dance and are currently dancing with American Ballet Theatre, Carolina Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and Festival Ballet Providence (among others); adding to the list of companies from all over the world who have had RDT alumni among their ranks.
