Mission Statement
Founded in 1999, the Church of the Earth depended at first on word of mouth in the Pagan community. The growth of the internet over the next decade dramatically changed the way people found the Church, though, with web searches overtaking personal referrals early in the new millennium. In 2010, a decade into the history of the Church, the Gaia's Gardens Meetup group changed things again. Now almost all new people find the Church either directly through the website, Meetup, or by word of mouth while attending one of the other Pagan meetups in the area.
About This Cause
Purpose and Beliefs Earth based religions are religions that include empirical proofs along with faith and beliefs. Rather than artistic icons, we tend to use the symbolism of the world around us to represent our faith and understanding of spirituality. Purpose (The Precepts of the Church) Create a place for ritual and ceremony in which followers of Earth centered religions can gather for holy days, marriages, funerals, blessings, handfastings, coming of age celebrations, dedications, and other such events. Promote understanding and education for those of alternative beliefs and for the community in general. Unite the community in times of need, making our community and the entire planet a better place to live. Beliefs (The Tenets of the Church) Every person's religious belief is correct, for them. Just as we expect others to respect our beliefs and opinions, we must respect theirs. We may not necessarily want to hear their opinions or dogma, but we do respect that it is the right path for them. All religions are interwoven in some way. The Earth is our Mother, we should respect Her. If we do not take care of the Earth, it will stop taking care of us and we will die. Conservation and recycling are very simple ways to help keep the Earth habitable. By doing whatever we can as individuals, we can set examples and do our part towards saving the planet. Old ways should not be ignored. By learning from the past we can set our own future. As we learn the truth about the past, we learn more and more that there is usually a wisdom in the old ways. Combining the old ways with new knowledge gives us greater insight into the world we live in. Learning from mistakes in the past can also help us avoid repeating them. We are accountable for our actions. You have freedom to do and believe anything you wish as long as it harms no one (including yourself). This has been phrased many ways, from the Wiccan Rede's, "And It Harm None, Do What You Will,” to the rule of three, the concept of Karma, and even the more mainstream, "Treat Others As You Would Have Them Treat You."
