Mission Statement
The Free the Slaves plan is simple. We liberate people from bondage, educate community members on ways to prevent the spread of slavery, and change the political, economic, and social conditions that allow slavery to persist. Currently, we have programming in Brazil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Haiti, India, and Nepal. Slavery is illegal, but it will take coordinated action by governments, international development institutions, faith communities, activists, and the public to actually eradicate human trafficking. Free the Slaves is demonstrating that our community model for fighting slavery should be a vital component of this global battle.
About This Cause
HOW DOES SLAVERY HAPPEN TODAY? There are 50 million people enslaved in the world today: men, women, and children made to work through force, fraud, or coercion; subject to violence, sexual abuse, and exploitation. They cannot walk away. Slaves toil on farms and fishing boats, in mines and factories, as maids and soldiers. Children work extremely dangerous jobs that stunt their growth as they are denied education and sufficient nutrition or rest. Women and girls are forced into prostitution or compelled to “marry” and serve violent husbands. At times, entire villages inherit illegal debts that force them into slavery. Human traffickers often use the allure of foreign employment, education, or marriage to deceive would-be migrant workers, children, or brides into enslavement. Slave labor taints thousands of products we buy every day through sweatshop factories and slavery-tainted raw materials. WHY FREE THE SLAVES? LIBERATION– Your support can literally help us #FreetheSlaves! By donating to FTS, your funds can help support our work in liberating enslaved people in places like Ghana, Senegal, India, and Vietnam! EDUCATION– Education is the key to ending modern slavery. We work to educate at-risk communities, locally based CSO, and even families of survivors on how to stay FREE! RESTORATION– We know that modern slavery exists all over the world. But what happens when survivors finally break free? We work to offer them rehabilitation and restoration through food, shelter, and support. REALIZABLE TARGETS: You can help us meet our specific 2023 goals: • LIBERATE more than 500 people in six countries • REACH more than 1,365 community groups with support for liberation and resistance • EDUCATE more than 50,000 people on their rights and risks • CONNECT more than 3,465 survivors with services to keep them from re-enslavement HOW DOES THE FREE THE SLAVES MODEL WORK? We help communities chart their own path toward sustainable freedom based on their unique needs and circumstances. We strengthen the capacity of grassroots organizations, government agencies, advocacy coalitions, and the media to take action. We support vulnerable communities through education, mobilization, and increasing access to education, vocational training, and essential services. We rescue those in slavery and help them rejoin their families and communities. We record and share success stories so the world can see what both slavery and freedom look like. And we systematically assess our work to ensure accountability and continuously improve our programs. Free the Slaves co-implements all community projects with and through locally-based organizations. But, we can't do this important work without you.
