Mission Statement

The mission of Performance Edge, Inc. is to provide superior performance arts training and opportunities that will attract a diverse group of young people. Through intensive individual and group training and performance, Performance Edge strives to enhance the cultural life of the entire community.

About This Cause

The Performance Edge Education and Performance Program is a series of intense workshops, music camp, and community performances designed to provide additional opportunities for musically talented youth in the Triangle area. We aim to contribute to the quality of musical performance in community, school, and church programs by offering high-level workshops, an intensive summer camp, and performances. Founded in 2002, Performance Edge is now an established nonprofit organization. From 1998-2002, what has become core programming was developed under the auspices and support of Arts Together. Increasing demand from the community for training opportunities created the need for the program to grow in size and broaden in scope. With this growth and maturation, the program began to move outside the balance and mission of Arts Together’s program offerings. The vision for the contribution a performance training program could make in the community had taken root and called for the launch of Performance Edge. The interchange of talent and training enhances not only individual performers and their respective programs, but also the cultural life of the community by encouraging students to take the training and skills to their high school, church, and community arts programs. Core programming for Performance Edge is designed for students, grade five through college, with a focus on ninth through twelfth graders because of their level of maturity to apply themselves individually and to achieve a true integration as performers. Participation is open to any musically talented student in Wake County and surrounding counties of any race or nationality. Our goal is to have a balanced blend of gender, ethnicity and socio-economic diversity. Our program is particularly committed to serving those musically talented students whose financial situations would not allow the means for performance opportunities. Over 200 young people from forty different schools benefit from our program each year, and many of our students continue to stay involved as they grow older by helping with various aspects of our program and “giving back” to our organization and the community it serves. We have been incredibly pleased to find that there is a great demand for the types of projects Performance Edge offers, and that there is no other program like it in the community. Performance Edge provides a different level of training that is beyond what the school and other readily available programs provide in the area. Our students are musically talented individuals of any race or nationality enrolled in grades six through college in Raleigh and surrounding counties, with the majority from Wake County. Our program is open to the entire general public, and our goal is to have a balanced blend of boys and girls, ethnic diversity, and a broad range of socio-economic backgrounds. Our overall participant diversity currently is close to 30%. Our largest performance, the Summer Showcase, takes place at Fletcher Theatre at the Martin Marietta Performing Arts Center in Raleigh, and Raleigh residents make up much of this audience. The participants/audience for Performance Edge events includes children, adults, and senior citizens of which Raleigh residents total more than 90%. Throughout the year, our students perform for nursing homes and retirement communities, and we continue to hear that these populations are underserved. The Summer Showcase music camp is our largest project and requires the most planning and preparation of all programs offered by Performance Edge. It is an auditioned, intensive, week-long music camp, held in June each summer, and it is comprised of concentrated sessions on vocal technique with the musical director, choreography styles with guest choreographers, staging and production, auditioning techniques, and judged auditions for spotlight solos. The choreographers and many of the staff have to be contracted one year in advance in order to secure their services. Our programmatic vision is for the workshops, Summer Showcase, and Capital Ambassadors performing ensemble to wholistically benefit the students who participate. The components in each workshop are beneficial for our students to achieve their goals of becoming high level performers who are prepared for their next professional endeavors. Through this continuing process, the overall programmatic vision is to provide teaching, performances, and strategies that will allow the students to prove how they will succeed.
