Mission Statement

LGBT Detroit's mission is to increase awareness of and support to Detroit’s dynamic LGBT culture through education and advocacy with integrity and pride.

About This Cause

LGBT Detroit, founded in 1994, commits to furthering its mission, increasing the prominence and visibility of Detroit’s LGBT culture, and building a strong, healthy and vibrant community, with a focus on youth & young adult development, sexual orientation & gender identity education and advocacy, and emotional and physical well-being. LGBT Detroit’s mission is to increase awareness of and support to Detroit’s dynamic LGBT culture through education and advocacy with integrity and pride. The safe, brave space moves forward key programs, events and campaigns: The All of Us Project, Bother To Brother, Woman 2 Woman, Healing & Support Services, LGBT Detroit Leadership Academy, End AIDS, LGBT Cancer Action Council, and the Michigan Coalition for HIV Health & Safety. Hotter Than July, the 24 year-old flagship week long event, celebrates pride and reaches a critical and vulnerable mass of over 8,000 persons. In 2016, LGBT Detroit purchased a 3,600 sq ft facility and in 2018 purchase a 2,500 sq ft facility. This acquisition makes LGBT Detroit the largest physical LGBT organization in North America, thus creating an educational and advocacy campus. The safe, brave space expansion is the ability to organize and strategize around the protection of the vulnerable — by engaging businesses, elected officials, residents and law enforcement agencies.
