About This Cause
Mercy began with a gift when Catherine McAuley donated her inheritance to establish the first House of Mercy, caring for women and children in early 1800’s Dublin, Ireland. The Sisters of Mercy, founded by Catherine and her companions, came to St. Louis by steamboat in 1856 and continued to serve the poor, sick and uneducated. Today, Mercy is the fifth largest Catholic health care system in the United States and serves more than 3,000,000 people annually. Mercy includes 40 hospitals, 300 outpatient facilities, 39,000 co-workers and 1,900 integrated physicians in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Mercy also has outreach ministries in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
