Mission Statement
Our Military Kids recognizes the sacrifice of children of deployed National Guard, deployed Reserve, or post-9/11 service members in treatment for combat-related injuries, illness, or wounds by offering extracurricular activity grants that build the child's self-confidence, enhance family wellness, and strengthen a shared sense of community.
About This Cause
Our Military Kids' extracurricular activity grants cover the cost (up to $300 per grant) of an activity of the child's choosing while a parent is deployed with the National Guard or Reserve or receiving treatment for post-9/11 combat-related injury, illness, or wounds. The activity helps the child focus on something positive as they cope with the stresses of separation from their military parent or while a parent recovers from the visible and invisible wounds of war. Our Military Kids has identified a simple but impactful way of helping military families cope with the challenges of separations during deployments and the recovery period associated with the visible and invisible wounds of war. The extracurricular activities get the children and their parents out of the house and back into the community. From improved school performance, to making new friends, to combatting depression, children reap priceless benefits from the grants. Additionally, parents' lives change for the better as they see their children blossom when they find joy in everyday life, often after struggling to deal with their situations. Injured and deployed service members also comment that they feel these grants help them as well because they know their children are taken care of. They can focus on their mission during deployment or their own recovery when severely injured. The Our Military Kids program started out with what seemed like a simple goal: to help children stay active and healthy during a time of parental injury or period of deployment. Our Military Kids has achieved this goal and more. By focusing on a single goal for children, the program helps struggling military families to get through very difficult times. This approach to achieving a single goal has resulted in multiple positive outcomes.
