Mission Statement
To break the cycle of domestic violence by providing comprehensive support, services, and education to our clients and community.
About This Cause
My Sister’s House, Inc. is the Lowcountry's only full-service provider of free domestic violence survival, recovery, and awareness services. My Sister’s House provides no-cost support to residents of SC’s Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley Counties, as well as those seeking domestic violence survival support while temporarily residing in our region for personal or business travel, military service, or temporary relocation reasons. Governed by our Board of Directors, with a maximum capacity of 15 individual board members, MSH is a vital nonprofit pillar of the communities we serve. Established in 1980, our local impact is significant and continues to increase yearly. Our most recent Annual Impact Report (2023) details MSH services provision to more than 2,000 callers, clients, and their children through DV survival and recovery services and educated nearly 20,000 community members, service providers, and nonprofit partners through our outreach and education programs. My Sister's House provides a comprehensive suite of no-cost client and community programs, expertly developed over forty-four years of dedicated service to the Lowcountry region, including: FREE 24/7 DV CRISIS & SUPPORT HOTLINE Operated by My Sister’s House victim services staff, callers are offered supportive safety planning, guided intake for entering MSH client programs including emergency shelter, clinical therapy, court advocacy, and more, and resource referrals to our network of service providers. FREE INDIVIDUAL CLINICAL THERAPY MSH Therapists provide individual, dedicated weekly sessions to enrolled Clinical Therapy clients, providing consistent mental health and emotional wellness support in a 1-1 counseling format. These sessions, developed in a standard 4-month series of weekly 1-hour sessions, are designed to support the client as an individual, empowering them through trauma-informed therapeutic methods and approaches to rebuild their self-esteem, establish and grow their support network, and develop and sustain healthy thought patterns and relationship behaviors. FREE THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT GROUPS MSH Therapists facilitate virtual, secure weekly support groups exclusively available to enrolled Clinical Support Group clients. Enrollment is continuous and clients are invited to the weekly schedule of sessions for as long as they remain registered with the program. Participants are both sheltered and community-based clients, and their DV experience may be current or past. We welcome clients to continue participating in Support Group sessions regardless of the immediacy of their DV trauma because we recognize that mental health stability for trauma survivors is an ongoing need and is not a linear process. My Sister’s House offers general women’s support groups for survivors age 18 and over, as well as specialized support groups for male survivors of domestic violence and Spanish-speaking survivors of domestic violence. FREE PRIVATE EMERGENCY SHELTER My Sister’s House provides emergency shelter for clients and their children seeking immediate safety from domestic violence through private, individually assigned locations across the Tri-County region. Through our network of hotel and private property locations, clients and their children aged 17 and under are provided with confidential, secure accommodations with consideration for their transportation, employment, and education access needs. All Private Emergency Shelter clients and their children are supported with Essential Needs Assistance customized to their specific needs, including food, clothing, toiletries, medicine, school supplies, access to technology, and more. FREE SAFE HAVEN HOUSING My Sister’s House provides extended-stay housing through a network of privately leased properties in partnership with local property owners and managers throughout the Tri-Counties. Clients in our Safe Haven Housing program receive continued support from the Private Emergency Shelter program, with additional time to build resources, independent stability, and continued support from our wrap-around services model. FREE COURT ADVOCACY My Sister’s House provides victims of domestic violence with filing, assistance for Orders of Protection and Restraining Orders, working with them to understand the filing requirements, their rights, and the filing process. Overseen by the MSH Court Advocate, a member of MSH staff, the Court Advocacy program is supported by trained volunteer Court Advocates and works closely with law enforcement, attorneys, and Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley County courts. Through access to justice facilitation, the Court Advocacy team offers guided referrals to pro-bono and sliding-scale attorneys, with collaborative partnership to continue providing advocacy and accompaniment services as needed. FREE INDIVIDUAL CASE MANAGEMENT My Sister’s House DV Advocates provide personal, dedicated support for all aspects of a client’s survival, recovery, and healing journey. Clients receive continued, regular planning with their case manager, collaborating to identify goals, resources, and progress toward long-term, sustained independence. Case managers work with a vast network of local nonprofit service providers and connect clients to appropriate partners to support their evolving recovery, resource, and stability needs. FREE COMMUNITY EDUCATION & OUTREACH My Sister’s House advances our mission to break cycles of domestic violence with a range of awareness and training programs for the community. We work to increase awareness of the issue and impact of domestic violence, inform and educate victim services providers, and engage and empower community advocates. Programs include outreach tabling, mission and resource awareness speeches, private and public training workshops, in-service trainings, corporate education and resource trainings, broadcast, print, and digital media engagement, and advocacy education.
